Overthinking is an annoying and unhealthy habit that can prevent us from being productive or even happy. The worst thing is, none of us want to do this, it just happens especially while we are alone or laying on a bed trying to get a sleep.
It can be frustrating to overthink all the time because it can ruin your day, and even make you lose sleep. In some extreme cases, overthinking can even affect your mental health. But relax, there are a few things you can try to keep yourself from overthinking.
Distract Yourself
The first and simplest way to stop yourself from overthinking is to find a distraction. When you are distracted and doing something you enjoy, your mind will focus on the thing you are doing instead of overthinking. Distractions can be different for everyone. It depends on the things that can give you excitement.
You can learn a new skill like cooking, play an instrument, or learn a new language.
These activities will take a lot of your attention and overthinking would not have a chance to disturb you. Simpler things could also help like read a book, play a video game, or watch a movie.
Do Something Nice to People
Keeping yourself from overthinking can also be nice not only to you, but also to other people. Trying to help someone and ease their problems can be good for you, and help you to put things in perspective. This can help with your overthinking problem.
Try to think about the people around you like your friends and family. Maybe you have a friend who just got divorced, or a family member who just broke up with their boyfriend or girlfriend, or a colleague who is currently in a hospital.
You can visit them, talk to them, give them company or even a little gift like nice food.
To know that you can make someone's day better will repel negative thoughts and keep yourself from overthinking. This will also give you something productive to do instead of drowning in a stream of thoughts.
Look at Your Success
When overthinking comes out of nowhere, try to stop it by taking your notebook or your phone, and write down the good things you have done in a week. It doesn't have to be big, good things are good things no matter how big or small they are.
You might be surprised how good it is to look at the list of good things you have done lately. It could help you to realize how good of a person you are. Every time you find overthinking creeping in, try to do this instead of letting your thoughts spiral.
Let it Go or Take Action
There are things that are already out of your hands, and there are things that you can still do something about. If it's already over and you can no longer do something to help, just let it go. But if you can still do something to take care of it, instead of thinking over and over, just do something about it.
Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help
You are not alone and it's important to realize that. You can always try to ask your trusted friend or family member for help. It could be as simple as just talking to each other, eating nice food in a nice restaurant, or having a walk in a park on a nice day.
