Who loves a lot of cheese on meals? Many people cannot decline more cheese on top, but you have to be careful with your cheese intake. Many people think that cheese is healthy and delicious, but eating too much cheese can lead to these side effects according to dietitians.

Indigestion and Heartburn

Have you ever felt an unsettling rumbling in your stomach after eating food with a bunch of cheese? Cheese is a dairy product that still comes with lactose. Your stomach conditions can be caused by the difficulty of your body to digest lactose in cheese.

If you are lactose intolerant, you should not eat too much cheese because it can cause bloating, gas, and other gastrointestinal disturbances. It does not mean that you should not eat cheese at all due to your lactose intolerant condition because some types of cheese, such as Swiss, Parmesan, and cheddar cheese contain lower lactose that might be more tolerated by your body.

Cheese might also be high in spice, salt, or fat so when you eat too much of it, you might suffer from heartburn. That is why it is better to eat cheese and moderation and avoid it late at night.

Too Much Saturated Fat

Although cheese is labeled as a healthy dairy product, you must not forget that it is high in saturated fat. You need to keep saturated fat intake lower than 10 percent of your calories per day. You might have a risk of eating too much saturated fat from some types of cheese, including cheddar, Swiss, provolone, and mozzarella cheese.

A high intake of saturated fat will not be great for your heart health. In this circumstance, you might want to replace saturated fat sources with unsaturated ones, such as avocado; nuts and seeds; canola, peanut, and olive oils.

Dietary Cholesterol Intake Increase

There was a time when people thought that dietary cholesterol was a nightmare for health. It is not that problematic, but you should limit the intake to keep your body healthy. You might want to check the dietary cholesterol content in your cheese to avoid eating too much cheese.

Cheddar cheese, for example, contains a higher amount of cholesterol than Swiss cheese. It does not mean that you always have to measure your cheese intake in milligrams because you can still maintain the balance by eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Choosing low-fat or fat-free dairy products can also be a great way to maintain your dietary cholesterol balance.

Too Much Sodium

If you eat too much sodium, it can lead to high blood pressure that might bring you heart disease risk. You might not realize that eating too much cheese can increase your sodium intake. When you eat cheese at a meal or snack, you should be careful not to eat too much sodium throughout the rest of the day.

Provolone cheese has the highest amount of sodium followed by cheddar, mozzarella, and Swiss cheese. You also have to remember that cheese is often used for food or snacks with high sodium content, such as nachos or pizzas.
